🏥 Hospital Bag Essentials
Portable Handheld Fan
Nobody tells you this — the hospital is warm, and they will put a heated blanket on you right after surgery. A small handheld fan is one of the best things you can bring. It helps with nausea from anesthesia, hot flashes, and just feeling human again when you’re overheated and uncomfortable.
💛 This one comes up in my “What They Don’t Tell You” article — it made a real difference.

💋
Lip Balm
Your lips will be dry and chapped after surgery — the oxygen mask, the anesthesia, the mouth breathing, all of it takes a toll. Pack a good lip balm in your hospital bag and keep it on your bedside table. Such a small thing that makes a big difference when you’re just trying to feel comfortable.

🔌
Long Phone Charger Cable
Hospital outlets are never where you need them. A long charging cable means your phone can reach from the outlet to your bed without you having to stretch, strain, or ask someone to hand it to you. You’ll be on your phone more than you expect — texting family, watching shows, resting — keep it charged and within reach.
💛 Get at least a 10-foot cable. You won’t regret it.

🛏️ Comfort & Sleep
🌸
Mastectomy Pillow & Seatbelt Cover — Combo
The one product I tell every woman to order before surgery. The heart-shaped pillow cushions your chest, and the seatbelt cover protects your incision every single car ride. Do not leave the hospital without this.
💛 Angelica’s pick: I used this every car trip for months.

Mastectomy Pillow — Chest Support Only
If you already have a seatbelt cover or just want the chest cushion for resting at home and propping your arms, this is the one. Soft, washable, and shaped to sit right where you need it.

Seatbelt Cover — Mastectomy & Surgery
Every bump in the road will remind you your seatbelt is there. This padded cover makes car rides tolerable and keeps the belt off your chest and drains. A must for every single outing post-surgery.

😴
Pillow System for Sleep
You will not sleep flat for weeks. A wedge pillow system keeps you elevated, takes pressure off your chest and abdomen, and saves your neck. This was my sleep setup every single night for the first 6 weeks.
💛 I cannot overstate how important this is — invest in it.

🧦
Compression Socks
Hospital-grade compression socks aren’t glamorous, but they protect against blood clots during recovery when you’re moving less than usual. Your surgeon will likely recommend them — have them ready before you come home.

🪑
Power Lift Recliner
If you can only buy one big-ticket item, this is it. A power lift recliner lets you get up and down without using your arms or straining your chest — which you literally cannot do after surgery. This chair was my whole world for weeks.
💛 Worth every penny. My husband and I both agree on this one.

🚿 Bathroom & Mobility
🚿
Shower Bench
Standing for a full shower is not happening in those first weeks. A sturdy shower bench lets you bathe safely, without holding your arms up or risking a fall when you’re still on pain medication. Non-negotiable.
💛 I chose this one because it actually looks nice — not like a clinical surgical chair. I never felt like I wasted my money, and it’s still in my bathroom today, long after recovery.

Grabber / Reacher Tool
Dropped something? You cannot bend down to pick it up, and you cannot reach above your head. This grabber tool is your arm extension for everything — from picking up a phone charger to grabbing something off a shelf. Keep one in every room.
💛 Get two. You’ll thank me.

Non-Electric Bidet Attachment
Showering is hard those first few days — you can’t stand long, can’t reach, can’t twist. This bidet attachment was a huge help for staying clean without straining. No electricity needed, and my husband installed it in about 20 minutes.
💛 Angelica’s pick: made those first few tough shower days so much easier.

👙 Post-Surgery Clothing
🩷
Post-Surgery Bras
Front-closure, wireless, soft fabric — these are the holy trinity of post-mastectomy bras. Look for ones with pockets if you need a breast form, and make sure the band doesn’t sit on your incision. I wore these for months.

🩷
Cotton Bralet
Some days you just want something soft against your skin with zero pressure. A simple cotton bralet — no underwire, no structure, no fuss — is perfect for resting at home. Breathable and gentle on healing tissue.

✨
Shapermint Compression Shapewear
Shapermint compression shapewear was a game changer for abdominal support later in recovery — but timing matters. I waited until around the 6-week mark before introducing any compression garments, and only after getting the green light from my surgeon. Once cleared, it made such a difference in how I felt moving around.
💛 Always confirm with your doctor before wearing compression shapewear. Every recovery is different.

🩲
Spanx Tummy-Control Underwear
I looked everywhere for underwear with tummy control that would actually work around an incision. These were the ones — great for low-back dresses or shorts when you want smooth coverage without pressure on your scar.
💛 Pricier, so I save these for special occasions.

🩲
Maidenform Tummy-Control Underwear
A great budget-friendly alternative to Spanx. These sit a little higher on the waist, so they show above a low-back dress — but for everyday wear or shorts, they give the same supportive coverage for a lot less.
💛 My go-to when I’m not wearing something low-back.

Jockey Seamfree Stretch Cami Bralette
These are the best everyday bras, hands down. Soft, seamfree, and stretchy with zero pressure on healing tissue.

💊 Nutrition & Gut Health
💪
Protein Powder
Healing from major surgery requires significantly more protein than your normal intake. Your body is rebuilding tissue, closing incisions, and fighting fatigue — all at once. A clean, easy-to-digest protein powder made it simple to hit my daily targets when my appetite was low. Look for one without artificial sweeteners and easy on digestion.
💛 I added mine to my daily green shake — the same one I’ve made for over 12 years.

💊
MiraLAX Gentle Laxative
Seriously, your new best friend. Opioid pain medications after surgery cause constipation — it is not a matter of if, but when. MiraLAX is gentle, tasteless, and dissolves in any drink. Start it the day you come home and don’t wait until you need it. Your surgeon will tell you the same thing.
💛 Don’t skip this. I’m being serious. Have it waiting on your counter when you get home.

💧
Glass Water Bottle
Staying hydrated matters so much for healing, and this glass bottle makes it easy to track how much water I’m actually getting each day. It’s held up well too — each one lasts me 6-8 months before I replace it, which makes the price worth it.

🩹 Wound Care
🩹
Pads Used as Gauze / Wound Dressing
Soft, non-stick pads are essential for protecting incision sites during the early weeks — especially around drain sites. These are the ones I kept stocked and used daily while my incisions were still healing.

🌿
Silicone Scar Tape
Once your incisions are fully closed, silicone scar tape is one of the most effective tools for flattening and fading scars. I waited until my skin was resilient enough — around month 6 — and then used this consistently. You’ll see a real difference.
💛 Patience is key — don’t start this too early. Ask your surgeon.

💧
Scar Gel
A silicone-based scar gel works beautifully alongside or in alternation with scar tape. Apply it to closed, healed incision lines to hydrate the tissue and encourage smoother healing over time. I use this as part of my daily care routine.
